Tesla Model 3 Loses Consumer Reports Recommendation Over Reliability Issues

Tesla Model 3 reliability causes car to lose CR recommendation
Tesla Model 3 loses Consumer Reports recommendation

23 February, 2019

The Model 3, which started deliveries in the second half of 2017, was initially denied a recommendation by the magazine past year. This electric vehicle (EV) is the cheapest among all three Tesla EVs in the market with its starting price pegged at $43,000. Owners also complained about glass defects, as well as general fit and finish issues; panel gaps and poor painting have both been a long-standing subject of criticism for Tesla vehicles.

Trouble with the Model 3 includes rear windshields that are susceptible to stress fractures, which won't be fixable with a software patch, so Fisher said another re-rating in the near term is unlikely. Part of this was based on reviews of thousands of vehicle owners.

Given the somewhat back-and-forth relationship Consumer Reports tends to have with Tesla, it wouldn't be shocking in the slightest to see the Model 3 get back its "buy" recommendation over the next few months. Consumer Reports said the issue of reliability had been a weak spot for Tesla. The Model 3 joins the Model S on the outside of the Recommended list looking in.

"When a vehicle has an enthusiastic following, like with Tesla, owners may overlook some issues".

Where all Tesla models excel is the powertrain, with CR member reporting few problems.

Jaguar and Fiat were the lowest, each with a score of 44.

On January, Tesla noted that Model 3 handovers in China would begin around March.

The spokesperson added, "This new data from Consumer Reports comes from their annual Owner Satisfaction survey, which runs from July through September, so the vast majority of these issues have already been corrected through design and manufacturing improvements, and we are already seeing a significant improvement in our field data".
