In addition to switching off the electric lights to mark the Earth Hour, there are several fun activities that can be organised to spend the hour.
The lights are usually plugged off from 8:30 in the evening to 9:30 p.m.as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Egypt's Great Pyramid, New York's Empire State Building, the Sydney Opera House, the Shanghai Tower and the Christ the Redeemer monument in Brazil were just some of the more-than 100 monuments to be thrown into darkness.
Residents around the world are being urged to turn off the lights in their homes for one hour Saturday night as part of Earth Hour, an annual effort to appreciate the planet. The Earth Hour has grown since its inception and over 180 countries and territories participated in last year's Earth Hour. Every year, people turn their lights off to spread awareness about sustainability and climate change.
