US House panel launches probe into possible obstruction by Donald Trump

Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff of California, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, Eliot Engel of NY, the chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the chair of the House Oversight Committee, signed the letters, which were sent to acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The House Judiciary Committee is launching a sweeping new probe of US President Donald Trump, his White House, his campaign and his businesses, sending document requests to 81 people linked to the president and his associates.

Jerry Nadler said the requests for documents are to "begin investigations, to present the case to the American people about obstruction of justice, about corruption and abuse of power".

Other high-profile names on the list include perennially embattled White House aide and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, former White House counsel Don McGahn and the president's inaugural committee. But he said, "The claim that there is no evidence is factually wrong".

If House Democrats are planning to impeach Trump, it may fit into a reelection strategy painting Democrats as emotionally volatile and unhinged.

Document production requests have so far been sent out to presidential sons Eric Trump and Trump Organization Executive Vice President Donald Trump Jr.

Mr Nadler said he believed Mr Trump had obstructed justice.

"We don't even know what the Mueller report says, but Democrats are already hedging their bets", Representative Doug Collins (R-Ga.) said".

As special counsel Robert Mueller wraps up his Russian Federation probe, federal investigators have focused on conflicting public statements by President Trump and his team that could be seen as an effort to influence witnesses and obstruct justice, people familiar with the investigation told CNN.

Cummings, Schiff and Engel's requests follow up on a joint letter the chairmen sent to the White House last month, in which they requested information about records maintained during Trump's discussions with Putin.

The House Oversight and Reform Committee received testimony from Cohen last Wednesday in a high-profile hearing where the president's former lawyer accused Trump of lying to the public about his business interests in Russian Federation, his role in silencing women who alleged sexual encounters during the 2016 election and his knowledge of WikiLeaks's hacked material damaging Clinton. The panel also is looking at whether Trump has used the White House for personal enrichment in violation of the Constitution's emoluments clause.

House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) later responded on the show, stating, "I think Congressman Nadler made a decision to impeach the president the day the president won the election".

Trump, since returning from his collapsed summit in Hanoi last week with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has resumed his Twitter attacks on Mueller's investigation and the growing number of inquiries in Congress.

Trump maintains that his campaign did not collude with Russian Federation and has repeatedly attacked the investigation on Twitter.
