A child could be seen being rescued and carried away through a crowd of people.
The Lagos General Hospital also reported the deaths of six victims rushed there.
Many locals told AFP that the building, which was in an advanced state of disrepair, had been "earmarked" for demolition by the authorities in Lagos state. "What we learnt was that some government officials, after the initial marking of the house for demolition, were compromised with bribes in their subsequent visit, otherwise the building ought to have been demolished a long time ago", Komolafe said. Search and rescue work continues in Nigeria a day after a building containing a school collapsed with scores of children said to be inside.
Rescue operations ended at the site on Thursday afternoon as no more survivors were found, said Ibrahim Farinloye of the National Emergency Management Agency.
Reviewing the situation, the governor said he received information that the building was residential, with the school operating illegally within the premises, and added that about two floors of the building sunk under the ground.
One of them is Lagos Island, a densely-populated area which is one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods. This is one tragedy too many, given that most of the victims are school children.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said he was saddened by the incident, which mostly affected children.
