Trump argued that many migrants crossing the border illegally are making bogus asylum claims. When complaining about the Flores legal settlement that governs treatment of migrant children and families, he blamed "Judge Flores, whoever you may be".

Referring to a "colossal surge" of immigrants, Trump convened a discussion with immigration officials and local leaders in Calexico on the U.S. -Mexico border just north of the much larger city of Mexicali.

He also said in a tweet he's "looking at an economic penalty for the 500 Billion Dollars in illegal drugs that are shipped and smuggled through Mexico and across our Southern Border".

"If Mexico doesn't do what they can do very easily, apprehend these people coming in. we're going to tax the cars, and if that doesn't work, we're going to close the borders", he said.

He described the section of border barrier he visited as new, even though it was a long-planned replacement for an older barrier.

Trump loves to dangle the threat of auto tariffs in worldwide negotiations, and suggested in February that he might impose duties on vehicles made inside the European Union.

While the president may think a sharp-edged wall would deter illegal border crossings, immigrants have long risked their health and lives to enter the U.S.at various points along its shared border with Mexico.

Trump also threatened to impose auto tariffs if the country didn't step up its apprehension of migrants transiting through the country to the USA from Central and South America.

BUT, I know a bunch of folks who do. More than half of those are families with children.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol cars are seen near the border wall between the United States and Mexico in Calexico, Calif., on April 5, 2019.

Although about 650 miles of the U.S. -Mexico is fenced off, no new border barriers have been erected during Trump's presidency.

A plaque placed by US Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen adorns the border wall after she inaugurated a newly renovated completed section in the El Centro Sector, at the US Mexico border in Calexico, California on October 26, 2018.

Since October, ICE had to release 126,000 people, Special Agent in Charge Dave Shaw said at the roundtable with Trump.

California and 19 other states that are suing Trump over his emergency declaration to build a border wall requested a court order to stop money from being diverted to fund the project. According to the Washington Post, the president was on hand to visit a new two-mile section of border fencing. Part of it is because of the fact that the country is doing so well.

Newsom says that since its founding, the United States has been a refuge and safe haven for people fleeing tyranny, oppression and violence.

Though Mr Trump, who has pulled a series of about-faces in recent days, walked away from this threat to close the border, he still intends to highlight conditions at the boundary with Mexico.

The governor says the president's rhetoric disregards the Constitution, the justice system "and what it means to be an American".
